Throwback Helmet Decals

Playing lacrosse can be just as much of a challenge as it is fun. However, the challenge is all part of the fun. A good way to overcome the challenges and increase the fun in playing lacrosse is to have some game strategies. While most people focus on offensive strategies, the defense must not be overlooked. If your opponent isn't able to score against you, it's impossible for you to lose the game. Here's a few defensive tips to strengthen your game.

A strong, effective defense should have good communication. A team that doesn't communicate well with each other on the field puts itself at risk. A player and his team are much more effective and ready to make the next move when all players know what their teammates are doing. This tip works equally well for offense as well as defense. For example, if a man is up on the ball, he should know if his teammates are there backing him up. If a teammate leaves a position from his side to play another position, he should tell the defense so they can adjust too. A player playing the ball should always "call it". Good communication helps let your defense know what the other team's offense is doing as well. If the offensive man is cutting, the guy who defends against him needs to call it out, especially when his teammates need to switch.

When you are in the unfortunate position of having to play someone who has better dodging or shooting skills than you have, a good strategy is to play with the sole intention of containing the player, preventing them from getting to the lacrosse goal, not taking their ball from them. If you can contain them it's going to be easier than going head to head. Using light slaps, keep them away from mid-field and well away from the goal. In this way you can keep a key player contained and force them to pass rather than to let them take the shot.

Goalies have the most challenging position on the defense. They are the last and most important defense against the lacrosse goal. One very effective way for a goalie to prevent the goal is to mimic the offensive players actions. When the offensive player raises his stick high, the goalie should carry his stick high as well. If the offensive player lowers his stick, the goalie needs to lower his to the same position. It is very important to stay alert and act quickly. An advanced offensive player might pick up on this strategy and try to throw the goalie off with frequent position changes. However, for an alert goalie this can be a great way to defend the goal.

Sometimes the game saving play is the result more from good planning than anything else. Good strategies are key in developing a good defense. The next time you hit the field on defense, try putting some of these strategies to the test. It might just make all the difference in defending your lacrosse goals.
