NFL – AFC West Division review
Raiders and Chiefs are tied in first place, the Chargers follow closely and the Broncos are trying to come from behind in a Division where things are far from being decided.
The Kansas City Chiefs last winning season was in 2006 (9-7), and there was nothing they could do about in 2009 to prevent their third consecutive losing season, which ended 4-12. In Week 17 against Denver, Running back Jamaal Charles set a franchise-record with 259 rushing yards, and linebacker Derrick Johnson's two INT-TDs tied an NFL record. And for the rookie quarterback Matt Cassel's 16 touchdowns tied for third in franchise-history for a rookie and kicker Ryan Succop's 25 field goals for 104 points tied for second-most for a Chiefs rookie.
The outlook for the 2010 season is not so clear for the Chiefs, and the doubts about them closing another losing season are still present. The road defeat from Sunday against Denver for 49-29 was the second one in a row and fourth of the season, and it puts into evidence how unpredictable this team can be, considering that Denver is the weakest team in the division. They will face another accessible team in Week 11, the Arizona Cardinals, where they will have the chance to end their 2 lost strike, and aggravate the Cardinals' record handing them their fifth loss in a row.
With a .300 win percentage the Oakland Raiders ended up the 2009 season in the third place of the AFC West for their fourth consecutive losing season. Punter Shane Lechler's 43.9-yard net average set a NFL record for a single-season. In Week 16 kicker Sebastian Janikowski's 61 yard field gold set a franchise record, and tight end Zach Miller's 800+ receiving yards in a season made him the third Raider to do so.
The Raiders have greatly improved in the 2010 season. After Week 10 the Raiders hold a .556 win percentage that clearly surpasses the .300 from 2009. They will be back from their Bye –which they reached with a 3 win strike- to hit the road and visit the Steelers on Week 11, with Jason Campbell confirmed as the starter quarterback, despite Bruce Gradkowski's recovery. With Campbell as starter Oakland has won 3 of the last 4 games, something to take into consideration.
The San Diego Chargers reached the 2009 AFC Divisional Round and lost to the N.Y. Jets 17-14, after a season where they had 11 consecutive wins -tying the franchise record- and finished 13-3 to clinch Division. They also set an NFL record of 22 consecutive games with 20+ points. The Chargers also witnessed how for the second time in their history a wide receiver and tight end duo had a 1,150+ receiving yards each: WR Vincent Jackson with 1,167 and TE Antonio Gates with 1,157, following the steps of the 1980 duo WR John Jefferson (1,340) and Kellen Winslow (1,290). And quarterback Philip Rivers set a franchise record with consecutive +100 passer rating seasons, in a year where he also set a career-high 4,155 passing yards, which is the third highest for a Charger.
The Chargers responded to the 3 lost strike that began in Week 5 with 2 wins in a row, and went to Bye Week occupying the third seat of the AFC West. The 2010 season is not being as successful as the previous one, but all the options to win a ticket to the postseason remain open, since Chiefs and Raiders are leading with a 5-4, not too far from their 4-5. Phillip Rivers is putting up together another great season throwing for 215 of 329 for 2944 yards and 19 touchdowns, and is on the way to top his record of two +100 passer rater seasons in a row. They will be facing division rivals Denver on Week 11, and are expecting to have Antonio Gates fully recovered from his toe and foot injuries.
The dream-like season start with a 6 win strike under the orders of rookie head coach Josh McDaniels was far from finishing like it had began, and the Denver Broncos ended up 8-8 in the year. In quarterback Kyle Orton's first season as a Bronco, he set a franchise record with 3,805 passing yards, the highest for a debutant, and tied the team record of 10 games with a 90+ passer rating. Before outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil's 17 sacks, no Bronco player had led the NFL in sacks, setting a franchise-record for a single season.
The Broncos put an end to the 4 lost strike with which they left to Bye Week against the Chiefs this past Sunday with a devastating 49-29. Still they are in the bottom of the division with a 3-6 record with only 7 games left of the 2010 regular season. Their next game will be versus another division rival, the Chargers, on Monday Night Football. Kyle Orton' second season in the franchise is coming together pretty well, as he has already 2,806 yards for 16 touchdowns, only 1,000 yards and 5 TDs down away from last season's numbers. Orton has found a great partner in wide receiver Brand Lloyd, whose 968 received yards put him as number one in the NFL, plus he has also provided 6 touchdowns to the cause.

1932 NFL Season by Jody, Iosias [Paperback] $109.93 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The 1932 NFL season was the 13th regular season of the National Football League. Even though the Boston Braves joined the NFL before the season, with the loss of the Providence Steam Rollers, Cleveland Indians and Frankford Yellow Jackets, league membership dropped to eight teams, the lowest in NFL history. Although the Green Bay Packers had finished the season with 10 wins, the league title was determined by winning percentage, with ties omitted. The Portsmouth Spartans and the Chicago Bears finished the season tied for first place (61). For the first time, the NFL arranged for a playoff game to determine the NFL champion. Extremely cold weather forced the game to be moved from Wrigley Field to the indoor Chicago Stadium. Author: Jody, Iosias Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 156 Publication Date: 2011/05/27 Language: English Dimensions: 9.02 x 5.98 x 0.36 inches |
