Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (R.B.I.) is a program that provides inner city youth an opportunity to play and learn the game of baseball. The program originated in Los Angeles, CA (1989) with the help of former MLB scout John Young. Now 2011, the program has been adopted by more than 200 cities in the United States and is still growing. In a previous article, I had mentioned the Internationalization that baseball has accomplished, especially in Latin America. Believe it or not, baseball was the game of choice for many black athletes circa the 1950s and 60s. It is obvious that the trend has moved onto basketball and football, which Mr. Young attributes to poorly organized baseball leagues and lack of funding.

Many inner city youth see sports as their only way out of poverty which is perhaps why so many have seen success in athletics as opposed to whites. Some would even say that poor neighborhoods offer fewer activities so sports are the only activities black youth do year around. Is the success of black athletes due to demographics or genetics? In other words, are blacks more naturally gifted athletes?

The hardest thing in baseball to accomplish is hitting a home run. A player has to swing at the right pitch with the right motion, possess plenty of strength as well as have superb hand-eye coordination. Many of the top home run hitters of all time have unfortunately also been linked to steroids; Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Jose Canseco, Alex Rodriguez, Jeff Bagwell, Jason Giambi, Juan Gonzalez, Mike Piazza, Sammy Sosa. Notice anything? Now let's take a look at some of the best African-American home run hitters of all time that didn't need steroids to accomplish their feats.

Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder are two young players that will one day join this elite group of black baseball players. Barry Bonds is not on this list because he did indeed take steroids. However, Bonds was widely considered as one of the best home run hitters of all time before he even began taking performance enhancing drugs. Perhaps the greatest home run hitter of all time will also not appear on this list and his name was Josh Gibson. Gibson was not allowed to play in the Major Leagues due to their unwritten "Gentleman's Agreement". He thus, spent most of his career in the Negro Leagues where legend has it, he hit anywhere from 750-1000 home runs. Gibson died very young at the age of 35.

While many inner city athletes will never compete in the Major Leagues, R.B.I. provides them with the opportunity to earn scholarships, form friendships, as well as learn about teamwork and work ethic. Programs like this are vital for baseball to regain the title as America's favorite pastime. With more African-American baseball players, younger black athletes will begin watching the games and grow up emulating their heroes. Subsequently, the MLB would see an increase in ticket and merchandise sales.
