The influence of early Soviet poster propaganda on the design of some "contemporary" Retro and Vintage T- shirts is not difficult to spot. These Soviet artists left a powerful legacy and a great wealth of graphic styles, interesting typography and communication techniques.
Shortly after the Russian revolution of 1917, the Soviet Union adopted views and attitudes radically different from those of the other major powers at the time. Not only was their outlook on politics totally unique for the period, but the way this new regime presented itself to the public and the outside world was also breaking new ground - particularly in its poster art.
For a time the Soviet graphic designers borrowed from the art forms which were becoming popular in the West - futurism, surrealism, cubism, the new avant garde modernist art movements. But it only took them a couple of decades to establish an immediately recognizable style of their own. And this style of "Soviet Retro-Art" is still in evidence today - not only in Retro Tees and Vintage T-shirts, but still utilized as a propaganda technique in posters by countries such as China and North Korea.
Being bold, striking, simple, uncluttered, with a clear focus and no room for misunderstanding, is the whole point of propaganda and makes for iconic and heroic imagery. The same principles applied to the design of Retro and Vintage T-shirts can make them just as effective in projecting a supremely confident message or attitude. And some real cool looking Tees.
Whether you agreed with the old Soviet Union's politics or not, the revolutionary enthusiasm demonstrated by the ordinary people of the time, left us a great graphic legacy and a style of artwork as valid today as it was then. It's a true "Rebel" art-form that will inspire Retro and Vintage T-shirts, posters and propaganda materials for generations to come. "Long live the Revolution" as they say.
