NFL Tickets – An Early Look at the Top Fantasy Players for 2010
Though fantasy drafts are still a ways away, it's never too early to start thinking about which players are poised for big seasons that can help you win your fantasy league. Here are the standouts heading into the season.
5. Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback, Green Bay Packers. Most would consider a quarterback this high a bit early, but it might not be wise to pass up an opportunity to get a guy like Rodgers. With an anemic offensive line last year, Rodgers was the second most prolific fantasy scorer in most leagues, not all that far behind Chris Johnson. The Packers addressed some offensive line needs in the draft, which should give Rodgers even more time in the pocket. Rodgers is the complete package at quarterback and the Packers need him to hoist the ball a lot to challenge the Vikings in the division. Look for Rodgers to have a huge year in Green Bay and sell plenty of NFL tickets in the process.
4. Adrian Peterson, Running Back, Minnesota Vikings. At the fourth spot in a draft AP is a no-doubter, but fantasy owners need to be wary of taking him in the top few picks. Fumbling problems caused him to be taken out in crucial situations in 2009 and he lacks the versatility of Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice. Still, Peterson no longer has Chester Taylor to steal carries and is arguably the most explosive back in the league, though I'm sure Chris Johnson supporters would have something to say on the subject.
3. Maurice Jones-Drew, Running Back, Jacksonville Jaguars. What separates Jones-Drew, in my mind, is definitely the pass-catching ability. Even against tough defensive fronts, the Jags have other ways to get the ball to Jones-Drew, making him nearly impossible to contain for an entire game. His 16 total touchdowns from a year ago are only a couple less than Peterson and he is more of a focal part of the offense. You certainly can't go wrong with Jones-Drew if you have the third pick in the draft.
2. Ray Rice, Running Back, Baltimore Ravens. Those who have had a chance to watch Ray Rice play on a regular basis know that he's a special talent. Rice had more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage last year, though his eight touchdowns pale in comparison to the totals of Jones-Drew and Peterson. Though some might think that the addition of Anquan Boldin to the Ravens' receiving corps may decrease his value, I think it actually goes the opposite way. Rice won't have 700 yards receiving again this year, obviously, but the Ravens should be able to move the ball much more effectively overall with Boldin. More redzone opportunities mean more touchdowns and more fantasy owners being happy. A season of 1,800 combined yards and 14 touchdowns is a legitimate possibility for a superstar in the making.
1. Chris Johnson, Running Back, Tennessee Titans. Well this one is easy. Much like LaDainian Tomlinson was the easy number one fantasy pick when he was in his prime, Johnson could be fitting into that role. Considering the wear and tear a running back absorbs, it won't be a long run at the top, but Johnson could very well put together a few straight years as the top fantasy guy. Johnson's 2,509 yards from scrimmage last year was absurd and he added 16 touchdowns to boot. The Titans have to be wary of running him into the ground, but Johnson is a complete back who can do everything. His patience in the backfield and pure speed make him a threat to take every carry to the house and he has now proven that he is durable enough to take an NFL pounding as well. Most importantly, Johnson not only has the physical skills but has an uncanny ability to read rush defenses and exploit weaknesses. When ESPN's Ron Jaworski said early in 2009 that Johnson was the best back in the league, there were other arguments to be had. Not anymore.
