Sunday is the favorite day of the week of even the most work-dreading football fans during the period of time ranging from about July to January each year. Football is more than a pastime for many of us – it is a passion, a way of life. It represents traditions that go back years and years and affinities held onto for decades. Yes, NFL football is an important part of American life. And the enjoyment of it includes many things – get-togethers, gear and, of course, food. This is a wonderful tradition, but one that can often be a bit costly to the waistline.
The foods we associate with NFL Sundays are not always the best ones. Beer, brats, nachos, potato chips – this is just the tip of the rather unhealthy iceberg of game day snacks. And while a veggie plate may be stuck somewhere in there, it surely comes along with some fatty dressing that we are all too eager to slap on.
How to cut calories on NFL football Sundays? Take a few cues here, and stay mean and lean like your favorite players.
1. Skip the Dip
Chips and dip are an American favorite. We load up on tons of snack foods to later slather them in Ranch, French Onion and all other types of yummy condiments. We stick our veggies in these substances too. But while they are delicious, most dips are fattening – due in large part to the fact that they are generally mayonnaise-based. If you can bear it, try to skip out on the dip all together. If not, buy low-fat or low-calorie condiments and stick to a single teaspoon serving.
2. Make a Plate
When we’ve got a whole table of food in front of us, we’re likely to realize how much food we are actually taking in. This is especially true when our attention is focused on the television. Instead of grazing over the entire availability of snacks and foods, make yourself a plate. Pick two or three items you will really enjoy, serve yourself in reasonable portions, and avoid going back for seconds.
3. Slow Down the Drinking
Beer is probably one of the highest-calorie items you’ll find at an NFL football gathering. That said, it is also the one that often goes most unnoticed. Try to cut down your intake of the high-calorie liquor as a whole, skipping out on it if possible. Think up other lower-calorie options, and if beer is necessary, stick to light.
