Walter Camp: The True Founder of American Football
Football season has begun and the sport is in full swing. Many fans love the ruggedness of American Football. It's not an activity sought by the weak. Fans follow their teams and cheer them on in their homes, at games, and businesses. This is a little history to enhance the appreciation of the cherished American game. Rule alterations in rugby football delivered modern day American Football. Walter Camp developed changes helped define the modern game. The rule changes made in 1879 gave football its new start. College coaches also contributed to alterations in action that helped football be a dominant sport in America. The popularity of school football is exactly what pushed the sports overall dominance within the 20th century.
Walter Camp was born in Connecticut and studied at Yale. Throughout the time of 1888 to 1914, Camp was the main athletic director and head football coach for Yale University. He played football at Yale and instituted probably the most notable and renowned rule changes in the overall game. Due to these significant rule changes, he's also known as the founder or father of the American game of Football. Rules were revised from the popular games of rugby and soccer to create a new group of standards for the sport. William Ebb Ellis also influenced these changes by running with the ball during a rugby game in 1823. This was an immediate breach from the existing rules and paved a way for more changes. A convention that was held in 1876 formed the initial rules today's football. Once the rules were defined, Walter Camp continued to edit and change rulebooks until he handed it down in 1925.
Walter Camp contributed significant football adaptations that now make the game what it has become today. He reduced the team size from fifteen to eleven. He made the line of scrimmage. A team was set to get undisputed possession until their very own violations force them to hand over the ball. Two new team positions were created: quarterback and center. The forward pass was also introduced by Walter Camp. A typical scoring system and numerical scoring were outlined. Other notable changes added in safeties, interferences, and penalties. In 1888, above knee tackling was allowed. Then in 1912, touchdown and field goal points were changed to six and three points. Each one is extremely important changes that molded American Football into its modern day creation.
The National Football League did not actually form until 1920. During this period, many teams dropped out of the league and didn't play their set schedules. A total of 4 teams played the complete season. Twelve months later twenty-one teams had joined the NFL. Membership grew even larger and the first playoff game was officially held in 1932. The NFL Players association and extra developments in the fifties helped strengthen the leagues presence over the next several years. Without the rule changes of Walter Camp, several advancements might have never occurred . Thus we pay tribute to his determination for this exciting game that people have all grown familiar with.
