NFL Quarterback - Gain Knowledge
Quarterbacks, also known as blocking backs make up part of the offensive team and line up behind the center of any American Football team. Quarterbacks are the leaders of the offensive team, and make most of the calls of play in the huddle and initiate the tactics to be used in any specific play. They are the leaders of all special plays and amend their tactics depending on the style of play be the defense.
This change of play is done with a special code, similar to tat used in a line-out in rugby, for the own team to understand and at the same time cause confusion to the defense. Quarterbacks can also use a tactic to stop the playing clock known as a ‘spike’ this is where the ball is thrown to the ground – and is usually used in the last moments of play to attempt for a field goal from the field goal team change, they come on and attempt a ‘Hail Mary Pass’. It an also be used the other way, if the team is wining a quarterback can spike the ball and kneel helping the time to run down and avoid a turnover, or injury.
A lot of rehearsal and practice goes into a quarterback’s style of play, and helping him decide how he will make his calls. Some quarterbacks, such as Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts calls all, or nearly all of his plays using a no-huddle offense. The play commences with a snap, and then it is the decision of the quarterback to throw to a receiver, hand it to a running back, or attempt to scramble past the defense with an offensive run.
As the defense have become Blitz heavy over the past years with faster defensive players it has changed the way in which a quarterback operates and his style of play. With the defense now bringing an additional threat to the teams passing and running game. This in turn means that the quarterback has to act and think a lot faster than in previous years and for this reason the change in the team’s league positions have begun to vary.
This basic overview of how a quarterback act and thinks has been brought to you courtesy of QuarterbackFan.com - a site dedicated to the NFL and providing official merchandise for all NFL fans and followers.
