Custom emblems epitomize the extent to which personalization has taken hold of our society. Burger King has been telling us to "have it your way" for decades. It seems that we may be finally taking this to heart.
I suppose that for most of us, we associate custom emblems with cars, in the logos that manufacturers use to help us recognize their brands at a distance. But custom emblems are something that we see elsewhere every day. We probably just don't think of them that way.
Companies sew them on our shirts and shoes, golf bags, and attach them to our laptops. Organizations create luggage tags, and put them on armbands and trophies. And so it's to be expected that we would also want to have our own custom emblems to personalize our personal space.
In spite of the number of hours that we work, we still spend more time at home than anywhere else. What is it about your home that makes it yours? You know that it's more than whether or not you own or rent it. And really, it's also more than the presence of your furniture, clothes, or stereo equipment. The one thing that makes the place you live into your home is how you personalize it with the little bits of decoration here and there that are unique to you.
Some people do this with dried flower arrangements, or artistic presentations of knick-knacks, or even collections of ceramic animals such as pigs or cats. Fridge magnets are also an example of how people personalize their homes. But these articles are mass produced and sold to tens of thousands of people. It's quite common to see one on someone else's fridge that we also have.
To have one that is unique to you, however, means that it must be made for you alone. This is where custom emblems come in. Some stores sell rectangular pieces of magnetized rubber with a sticky side on it. This enables people to put family photographs on them, making their emblems unique to them. Another way to do this is to have ask a potter to hand paint something personal on a plate, dish, or cup prior to the last firing. A much more expensive option is to have your most important books leather bound with your own custom emblems in the spine or on the cover. This is something the wealthiest families did in 19th century England.
As you can see, custom emblems can be used in a variety of ways to personalize the space that you call home. The next time you visit a friend's house, ask yourself what makes it unique to those who live there. It will give you ideas for how to make your home that much more special.
