Uniform Numbers on NFL Jerseys –What Role Does It Play in the Game?
In team sports, the squad number, shirt number, jersey number, sweater number, uniform number or simply a number is the number worn on a player's uniform to identify and distinguish each player (and sometimes others, such as officials) from others wearing the same or similar uniforms. But not all the uniform numbers of each sport game are the same.
The uniform numbers in American football are unusual compared to those in any other sport. They are displayed in more locations on the uniform than in those of other sports (on both the front and back of the jersey, on both shoulders, and often on the helmet), and on the front of the jersey, they are displayed very large, taking up almost the entire front of the jersey. First Role
Just as importantly, certain numbers may only be worn by players playing particular positions. A system of assignment of jersey numbers was initiated in American football's NFL in 1952, it was updated and made more rigid in 1973, and has been modified slightly since then. Below is the numbering system established by the NFL and in place since 1973:
- Numbers 1 to 19 are worn by quarterbacks, kickers, and punters. Since 2004,[4] wide receivers are also allowed to wear numbers between 10 and 19 if they so choose, even if there is an 80-89 number available.
- Numbers 20 to 49 are worn by running backs, tight ends (who may wear a number between 40-49 when 80-89 are unavailable), cornerbacks and safeties.
- Numbers 50 to 59 are worn by linebackers and centers.
- Numbers 60 to 79 are worn by tackles, guards and defensive linemen (the defensive ends, defensive tackles or nose guard).
- Numbers 80 to 89 are worn by wide receivers and tight ends.
- Numbers 90 to 99 are worn by linebackers and defensive linemen. In use since 1984.
- Numbers 0 and 00 are no longer used, though they were issued in the NFL before the number standardization in 1973.
Second Role
The jersey numbers assist the officials in determining possible illegal actions by players. Unlike most other sports, in which teams have smaller rosters, American football players routinely have uniform numbers that cover the full range of numbers from 1 to 99. So it maybe more difficult for the judges to verdict which player disobeyed the game rules clearly without uniform number in the furious game competition.
