As any avid football fan knows, recently the NFL started tightening their enforcement of the rules governing "dangerous hits" or "flagrant and illegal contact" between players in motion on the field. Over the past few weekends of NFL football games, several top defensive players have been fined $50,000 or even $75,000 for hard tackles that may have involved the use of dangerous force to the players in the area above the shoulders, with particular emphasis on helmet-to-helmet contact.
This is in response to several recent occurrences of offensive players, particularly ball-carriers like a running back or a receiver who has is has just caught a pass, being literally laid out on the field and suffering mild to moderate concussions due to a sudden helmet-to-helmet blow. Obviously, the rulings and the steep fines have stirred up considerably controversy, inasmuch as NFL football is, by its very nature, a hard contact sport, with arguably the hardest body to body hits of any professional sport. Of course, fans want to see hard action, and players know they have to apply very aggressive tackles to insure stopping strong opposing players in motion, and to insure their own victory. But ultimately, after enough players suffer significant injuries, safety concerns will push front and center and win out.
In light of these recent developments, and the desire to make sure the heads of both professional and amateur players stay well-protected, it's useful to re-examine the evolution of the modern day football helmet.
Interestingly, the helmet wasn't even a mandatory piece of protective gear in college football from the late 1800s all the way through to 1939-1940, when the NFL adopted it as mandatory.
The original 19th century football helmet was not much more than some criss-crossing leather straps fit close to the head. Later, full leather or moleskin helmets were fashioned by leather tradesmen such as shoemakers and blacksmiths. By 1915, the contours of the helmet began to approximate the shape we know today, including the addition of ear holes for communication.
Perhaps the most important innovation of the early 1900s was to use straps inside the helmet to cradle the skull and "suspend" the outer helmet a bit away from the head. This not only helped absorb impact, but allowed for better ventilation. Sports equipment manufacturers like Spalding and Rawlings followed this design.
But the real scion of thee modern-day helmet would have to be John T. Riddell, Jr., who invented the first molded plastic football helmets in 1939. Stronger, lighter, and non-rotting as damp leather was, these became the preferred NFL helmet. After a decade of necessary improvements, including breakage due to brittleness and face masks that tended to pop loose, they were fully championed after World War II. The NFL helmet continued to evolve through continued experimentation with the outer shape (more teardrop shaped to better deflect direct blows) and inner cushioned linings. Adjustable vinyl bladders filled with either fluid or air created a precise form fit around the player's skull, and enjoyed vogue for quite a while. However these tended to be heavier and more "sweaty" for the player's head, and after modern interior helmet pads were perfected, they became the preferred design by all players. And of course, the latest polycarbonate alloys became the material of choice over older plastics.
