Pittsburgh Steelers Tickets - Big Ben Leaves Pittsburgh in Difficult Position
As of April 21st, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had yet to suspend Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, though everyone knows that a suspension is imminent. Reports are that Big Ben will get four to six games of riding the pine to start the season, which will seriously affect the Steelers' outlook for the immediate future. More importantly, the Steelers have their long-term image to look out for, and Big Ben's actions have now put them in a precarious position.
It has been a nightmarish offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been one of the best teams in the last decade and only a couple seasons ago won the Super Bowl. After a bizarre story surrounding a nightclub incident with star wide receiver Santonio Holmes, the Steelers dealt Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth-round pick, which is an unbelievable bargain to obtain his services. Holmes was promptly suspended for four games by the league for violating the all-encompassing league conduct policy. With the quick resolution of getting rid of Holmes, the Steelers were clearly trying to rid themselves of a player with character issues so they could focus on the future.
Unfortunately for the Steelers, that future was dealing with the Big Ben debacle, which has taken over much of the media coverage in recent weeks. Sadly enough, while other teams were out trying to add pieces to their team to gear up for a winning season, the Steelers have been going backwards. Now, it looks as if they will be without their starting quarterback for at least the first four games, which does not bode well for a team that didn't make the playoffs a season ago. Some reports even had the Steelers shopping their star quarterback for a draft pick, which was previously unthinkable.
The situation also speaks to a league-wide epidemic of character issues and run-ins with the law. Everyone knows about the Michael Vick fiasco and the antics of Adam "Pacman" Jones, but Goodell had to have thought he had cleared the biggest hurdle he would have to deal with in his tenure as the league's commissioner. With a two-time winning Super Bowl quarterback now in the headlines, Goodell has to feel more like a babysitter than anything else.
Since taking over, Goodell's primary concern has had to be for the integrity of the game. Other sports have had to deal with major problems of course, perhaps no more intense than Major League Baseball and the steroid issues, but it has gotten out of hand in the NFL, which remains the country's most popular league. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has even come out and stated that Pittsburgh will have a zero tolerance policy for the future. After recent events, it's likely a policy that will become standard in the NFL.
Of course, no one likes a comeback story more than American fans. If you need proof, simply look at the Vick jerseys being sported in Philadelphia or the jubilation surrounding Tiger Woods at the Masters. If Ben Roethlisberger can come back in the middle of the season and win football games, the truth is that his legal issues will swiftly fade to the back of fans' memories and he once again will help sell plenty of <a href="<a href="http://www.stubhub.com/pittsburgh-steelers-tickets/">http://www.stubhub.com/pittsburgh-steelers-tickets/">Pittsburgh Steelers tickets</a>.
No matter how horrific the details or embarrassing to the league, Ben does deserve a second chance, but only because he was able to avoid criminal chargers. It is now a guarantee that he will be on a short leash and the signs he will see on the road will be nothing short of shocking – that you can bet on. The question remains: how will Ben respond? The task of fixing his image should be considerably more difficult than finding Santonio Holmes in the back of the end zone.
