NFL-Philadelphia Eagles beat Dallas Cowboys in the fight for a playoff berth
The Philadelphia Eagles currently sit at the top of the NFC East with a record of nine wins, four defeats and a winning rate of .692. The Eagles are trying to keep the best record in the division with the purpose of obtaining a pass into the NFL playoffs.
Philadelphia has been at the forefront of the NFC East for the last few seasons now. Its worst years came in 2005 and 2007, when the team ended in last place in its division. Throughout their participation in the NFL, the Eagles have a record three NFL Championships (1948, 1949, 1960), three conference championships (1960, 1980, 2004), eleven division championships and from 1947 to 2009 has participated 22 times in the playoffs.
Last season the Eagles finished second in the division but with the honor of being the wild card. The team achieved a record identical to the Dallas Cowboys, who beat Philadelphia for fewest points obtained against (Dal 250, Phi 337).
For the season, Philadelphia's goal has been to seize the top spot in the division. The beginning was not the smoothest start for the Eagles, as they fell 27-20 to Green Bay Packers, then recovered with two wins, against Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively. The fourth week Washington Redskins got in the way of Philadelphia and defeated the Eagles 17-12.
During the fifth week the Eagles completed a difficult game against San Fransisco 49ers, but in the game finished 27-24 in favor of Philadelphia. Then the Eagles surpassed Atlanta Falcons with a 30-17 score. Before going to BYE week, the Eagles suffered their third defeat of the season against the Titans by 37-19. After returning, the Eagles recorded three consecutive wins against Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins and NY Giants, respectively.
The Eagles open the thirteenth day of the NFL with a 34-24 victory over Houston Texans. Philadelphia a week later adds his ninth victory of the season by beating Dallas 30-27.
The Dallas Cowboys, on the other hand, have played a less showy game than Philadelphia. During the past few seasons (from 2002 to 2009) the Cowboys have only won two division titles (2007, 2009), were wild card in 2003 and in 2006 the team advanced to the playoffs. Dallas won the division championship last season, but its poor performance this season has sent the Cowboys to the last place in the division.
The season began with two defeats, first against Washington (13-7) then against Chicago 27-20. During the third week the Cowboys defeated the Houston Texans 27-13, but followed that success with five consecutive defeats. After these five games the Cowboys are starting to lose place in the NFC East. For the tenth week, Dallas has a little break and defeated the NY Giants 33-20. The following week the Cowboys repeated the Detroit Lions 35-19, but the defending champion New Orleans Saints 30-27 defeat them the next week.
Dallas suffers in the thirteen week but wins 38-35 in overtime over Indianapolis in a tight game where both teams fought hard.
The Cowboys where hosting the Philadelphia Eagles in week fourteen. The Eagles opened the scoring in the first quarter with a touchdown. Dallas responded by the end of the period tying the game.
The second quarter was a little tight but Philadelphia went ahead again with another touchdown. Dallas tried to get everything in the game, but just failed to score a field goal a few seconds to complete on time. The match went into halftime with the score 14-10 in favor of the visitors.
For the third quarter, Dallas took advantage with a field goal and a touchdown. The Eagles only scored a field goal. The Cowboys where ahead by 20-17. In the last quarter Philadelphia regained control of the game and added another touchdown and two field goals and made the game 30-20 in their favor. Dallas tried on several occasions, but could only score a touchdown (30-27) that was not enough to overcome its opponents.
Michael Vick, Philadelphia's quarterback, had his best performance of the season, as he was pushed hard by Dallas and suffered two interceptions, but still led his team to victory by completing 16 of 26 passes for 270 yards and two touchdown passes. The leader of Dallas, Jon Kitna completed 24 of 35 passes, 242 yards and scored, like Vick, two interceptions and threw two touchdown passes.
Philadelphia remains at the top of the NFC East and is in a fierce battle with the Giants, who after its 21-3 victory over Minnesota now have the same record (9-4) that the leaders of the division. This puts both teams in the struggle to be one of those who obtain a pass to the playoffs.
