It seems like there's never a shortage of storylines when Brett Favre takes the field. With all due respect to the Packers, this week may take the cake.
The Ol' Gunslinger has looked tired, partially lame and out of sorts in his first three games, as his team has struggled to only one win. People were beginning to question whether Favre would even make it to the end of the season. This is exactly why most of us figured he would return to the field in week four or five after he was fully recovered and ready to cash a big pro-rated contract. But Jared Allen and Co. shorted out that plan when they took a plane down to Mississippi to demand an answer from the blue jeans pitchman.
And if the pressure of a horrific start and rumors of an early-season re-retirement weren't enough, the last few days have provided plenty of fireworks. First, Randy Moss gets traded to the Vikings. Then (alleged) pictures of Favre's junk start flying around the Internet faster than a young Favre avoiding a sack. And mid-week Favre was sporting ice on a throwing elbow that led many to believe he is fighting tendonitis.
And, oh yea, he's returning to yet another city that once embraced him and now hates him. And it just so happens that the old team he is facing was one win from the Super Bowl last year (just like Favre's Vikings) and feature the best lockdown corner since – Darrelle Revis – since Deion Sanders. And it just so happens the dong pictures and sexy voicemails from Favre were exchanged with Jenn Sterger, a fellow former Jets employee. Damn I'm glad Favre came back.
Of course, all of this could break one way just as well as it could break another. Look at in a positive light, it could shake out like this: Favre finally has a receiver and soulmate in Moss, and both guys will be looking to redeem himself. Favre has a contempt for the media and fickle fans, and he will try and throw it (literally) in everyone's face with a big game in the Big Apple, beating his former and team and going WWF shill on everyone. It's great; he's become Hollywood Hulk Hogan.
There's also the very good chance it shakes out this way: Favre is distracted by Donggate, his elbow bothers him all game, he takes a beating, he and Moss can't get on the same page, Revis reads his mind a couple of times and takes on to the house and the catcalls rain down on the once-proud gunslinger.
This is all just speculation based strictly on the drama of the situation – which always seems like a good way to read the Favre tea leaves of late, but the fact of the matter is the game will be decided on the field.
It will definitely be fascinating to see if Moss solvers Favre's problem of not having Sidney Rice around to go deep to. Favre has always needed that guy who can get free downfield while he improvises, and Moss has proven to be one of the best in the history of the league at doing just that. Whether Favre will have time to find Moss – open or not – is another question. Expect the Jets to bring the house at Favre early and often.
Because of that, Favre can not get pass-happy. If the Vikes want to beat the Jets, they are going to need a steady diet of Adrian Peterson. If they can establish him and then let Favre get loose with some play-action stuff, the Jets aggressive defense could get burned.
Where Moss may make the biggest difference is in the red zone. The Vikings have been the worst team in the league in terms of passing the ball in the red zone, and have scored only twice in seven trips there this season. But Favre may finally have a go-to guy in the red zone with Moss. But those type of tight routes and timing require working together, and there is a good chance that between the Jets pass rush, Favre's desire to be a hero and Revis, the Vikings won't be able to see immediate red zone returns on their investment in Moss.
The Jets have found a winning formula on offense, establishing their ground game and not putting too much pressure on second-year QB Mark Sanchez to make huge plays. Their offensive line has dominated strong opponents this year. Allen may be the hero of the Vikings defense, but his strength is at getting to the quarterback, and if the Jets pound at him with LaDainian Tomlinson and Shone Greene, they can effectively neutralize the wild man on Minnesota's line.
As with most games in which Favre plays, there should be lots of drama and the game will likely come down to whether Favre makes a big play at an important time or makes one too many bold and dumb decisions. With everything swirling around this game, here's betting that Favre tries to do too much.Then the drama will really start.
