NCAA Football 11 Review

With the college football season fast approaching, many fans choose to take to the virtual gridiron to hype themselves up for the upcoming season. In EA Sports latest edition of the NCAA Football franchise, the 2011 version, you will not find a more true to life enactment of the game that we grow to love on Saturdays.

The foremost complaint about the NCAA games, is that it lacks the names of the actual players. If you have an online connection, you can rectify this issue. EA did a good job of making their non-named players true to their real life counterparts with their ratings and their looks. With an online connection, you can easily download a roster that will name each and every player in the game. While this review is about the Xbox 360 version, I am certain that it would be available on Playstation 3 as well. For Xbox players, go to the EA Locker, and type in "Fairdale Kings". From there, you will find a fully named roster of all 120 schools for your gaming pleasure. The roster has been unchanged, so the names will show in all game modes.

In representing the actual game we watch on TV every week, EA did a good job of giving fans many features to represent that. In the Road to Glory mode, you can either choose an existing player, or create your own, and control him to the steps of greatness, as you try to win the Heisman Trophy. This mode is great for players who always wanted to step on the field themselves, but never had the skill to do so. You will get pitches from coaches, you will practice, do interviews, just about anything you can think of that a real player would do.

The dynasty mode is great, as always. And EA has taken it a step further, with the ability to play with up to 15 other players controlling their favorite school online. One of my favorite parts of the dynasty mode is the recruiting. It is true to life with you having to make pitches based on the prospect's interest. Once you are ready to offer a scholarship, you can also schedule them to make an on campus visit to your school on a game week. The mode is deep, with the ability to write your own stories based on the game that you played out, and publish it in the game. It is a true representation of controlling your school.

The game play is much like college football. It controls a lot faster than the NFL counterpart, Madden NFL Football. The college game is more high scoring, and typically this will be compared to Madden. The movements of the players, and the tackling is true to life. You control your players upper half with the left stick, and their legs with the right. It makes the running that much more accurate of a representation to running on a football field. While it may be a bit easier to put up points, there are also teams such as Alabama with stiff defenses, so don't expect to cake walk everybody. And just because it is easy for you to get scored on, do not think that you won't be put up for the fight of your life on defense, too.

Overall, this version of NCAA Football is the best football game in the series, and in general. It is even better than this season's version of Madden, which says a lot, as Madden is EA's flagship franchise. The game makers did a good job in differentiating the two, and while Madden may be more mainstream, the NCAA series is the truest football game to the sport you watch on TV.
